Stepping into Kamikochi’s alpine valley, I was immediately enchanted by Taisho Ike Pond, a breathtaking natural masterpiece born from volcanic power. Formed in 1915 when an eruption of nearby Mount Yakedake dammed the Azusa River, this crystal-clear lake stands as a stunning testament to nature’s creative and destructive forces . Its most distinctive feature is the skeletal dead trees standing silently in the turquoise water, their stark forms creating an otherworldly contrast against the lush surrounding forest and snow-capped peaks of the Hotaka mountain range . On calm days, the glassy surface perfectly mirrors the mountains and sky, creating a mesmerizing double landscape that feels like stepping into a painting. A gentle wooden boardwalk circles the pond, allowing visitors to soak in the serene atmosphere and capture unforgettable photographs. Whether shrouded in ethereal morning mist or glowing under golden autumn sunlight, Taisho Ike Pond exudes a peaceful magic that makes it the crown jewel of Kamikochi’s natural wonders.
First drop off station of Kamikochi. Most of people start at here and walk across the forest to Kappa bridge. You will get welcome with the pond reflected the mountian and sky like mirror. Very impressive. To come to Kamikochi by bus recommend to book ticket in advance.
We get off at this pond on our way from shin shimashima station. Beautiful cloudy and full of tranquility, its foggy weather enhanced its mystical surroundings ambience
Beautiful spot! If going to kamikochi I would recommend getting off here and walking towards kappa bridge. Then continuing onto the first pond. And then taking the bus from kamikochi to wherever you need to go after.
