Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome, Koto

The Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome is a botanical facility located in Koto Ward, Tokyo, built on reclaimed land that was once the city's primary landfill site. Opened in 1988, the complex was designed to utilize waste heat from an adjacent waste processing facility to maintain tropical temperatures year-round, representing an innovative approach to sustainable urban development. The site itself, Yumenoshima Park, was transformed from a massive garbage dump that operated from 1957 to 1967 into a green recreational space, with the greenhouse serving as its centerpiece attraction.

The facility consists of three interconnected geodesic domes spanning approximately 2,000 square meters, each maintaining different climate zones. The A Dome features tropical rainforest plants from Southeast Asia and South America, the B Dome showcases plants from volcanic regions and small islands, and the C Dome displays flora used by humans throughout history, including crops and medicinal plants. The collection includes over 1,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, with notable specimens including giant water lilies, coffee plants, cacao trees, and various orchids. The temperature inside remains between 18-28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Visitors can explore elevated walkways that wind through the lush vegetation, providing close-up views of the canopy level and creating an immersive tropical environment. The greenhouse regularly hosts seasonal flower exhibitions and educational displays about tropical ecosystems and plant conservation. A small café area allows visitors to rest while surrounded by greenery, and the facility occasionally holds workshops on tropical plants and gardening.

The greenhouse is accessible via Shin-Kiba Station, served by the JR Keiyo Line, Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, and Rinkai Line, approximately a 10-minute walk from the station. Alternatively, visitors can take a bus from Shinonome Station or Kinshicho Station. Admission costs 250 yen for adults and 120 yen for those aged 65 and over, while elementary school students and younger children can enter free when accompanied by an adult. The location within Yumenoshima Park also provides access to sports facilities, a marina, and other recreational areas.
