What other travelers are saying about GALA Yuzawa Ski Resort
It was the perfect winter getaway for me and my 5-year-old daughter. We don’t ski or snowboard, but we still had an absolutely magical time from start to finish.
Getting there was so easy—the Shinkansen drops you off right at the resort, which meant no stressful transfers or long car rides with a little one. The moment we stepped out, we were surrounded by breathtaking snowy mountain views. My daughter couldn’t stop squealing with joy!
We spent hours playing in the designated snow play areas. The snow was soft and fluffy, perfect for making snowballs and building tiny snowmen. They even have sledding slopes that are gentle and safe for young children. We rented a sled on-site for a very reasonable price, and it was the highlight of her day.
We also visited the onsite observation deck—the panoramic view of the snow-covered mountains was absolutely stunning. It felt like we were inside a winter postcard.
When visiting Gala Yuzawa, you should wear appropriate winter sports attire if you plan to ski or snowboard. This includes thermal layers, a waterproof ski jacket, ski pants, gloves, a hat, and goggles. If you're not engaging in winter sports, warm winter clothing is still recommended due to the cold temperatures. Don't forget good-quality snow boots for walking around the resort.
Yes, Gala Yuzawa is accessible using the JR Pass, which is a convenient option for international travelers. The JR Pass covers the Shinkansen (bullet train) ride from Tokyo to the Gala-Yuzawa station, making it a straightforward and cost-effective way to reach the ski resort.
To reach Gala-Yuzawa from Tokyo, you can take the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo Station directly to Gala-Yuzawa Station. The station is unique as it's directly connected to the ski resort, making it exceptionally convenient for visitors. The train ride takes about 75 to 90 minutes, depending on the specific service.
The cost of a train ticket from Tokyo to Gala-Yuzawa varies depending on the type of train service (ordinary or reserved seating) and the time of purchase. Generally, a one-way ticket costs around 6,000 to 7,000 yen. Prices can fluctuate based on the season and demand, so it's advisable to check the latest fares closer to your travel date.
This place was amazing! As a tourist, I thought it was so convenient that you can just take the Shinkasen straight from Tokyo here. And the train lets out right into the resort! So convenient! The kids loved it and so did we. It makes day trips from Tokyo really easy. Lift prices are reasonable and there are quite a few runs of various levels. Next time. I'm in Japan during the snowy season, id definitely think about returning.
Very well organised resort. You get there basically right from the train, so it’s impossible to get lost. Rental services are available (approximately 15,000¥ depending on the equipment), but be prepared to queue.
Lockers are big and spacious.
Early in the morning is the best time to practice for the beginners,
Advanced slopes are also available
They have an English speaking ski school.
Also, it must be mentioned that everything at this resort is incredibly English friendly.
With my friend we took a snowboarding lesson with Diego, we both were first timers. Diego was very professional, he teaches with a lot of clarity and identifies well the needs and skills of the learners. We didn't expect to do as well as we did the first time and it's all thanks to Diego's patience and knowledge.
Rental gear is available on site, then you need to pay for the lift which is 7,300 JPY. The lesson was 12,000 JPY per person for the group session which is from 9.30am to 12pm or in the afternoon also for 2.5 hours. The price is very reasonable, value is great.
The place is beautiful and offers amazing views of the snowy mountains even if you don't participate in snowsports. Overall the staff are helpful and professional.
The only criticism is the lack of food services at the main building. After the lift there is a food court. If you need to eat breakfast, better get something at a convenience store on the way, as it takes some time to go from the main building to after the lift.
This is one hour travel from Tokyo. Suitable if you are looking for a one-day snow trip itinerary. They offer different snow activities like ski, sled, snow motor and snowboarding. You must try the sled- it was fun and exciting!! The layout of the place is easy to memorize and you wont get lost.
There are several resto inside of the building and their food were decent. You can rent a locker for 500¥. Restroom has hair blowers too. Staff are kind.
