Kawagoe Ichibangai Shopping Street, also called Kurazukuri no Machinami, is a historic merchant street in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, 30 kilometers northwest of Tokyo. The street features kurazukuri warehouse-style buildings constructed after an 1893 fire, with thick earthen walls and tile exteriors designed for fire resistance. Kawagoe prospered as a castle town with direct connections to Edo (Tokyo), earning the name "Little Edo" for its commercial and cultural ties to the capital.

The street preserves over 30 kurazukuri buildings, several designated Important Cultural Properties, representing rare surviving examples of Edo-period merchant architecture with black-plastered walls and heavy shutters. The district holds status as a National Important Traditional Buildings Preservation Area, demonstrating historical urban planning and construction techniques largely lost in modern Japanese cities.

Visitors walking Kawagoe Ichibangai encounter traditional shops selling local crafts, sweets, tea, sake, and regional products housed in authentic Edo-era buildings. The street includes specialty stores for sweet potato confections (a Kawagoe specialty), traditional textiles, ceramics, and handmade goods. Several buildings function as museums or galleries displaying period furnishings, merchant tools, and historical artifacts.

The iconic Toki no Kane (Time Bell Tower), a wooden bell tower rebuilt in 1894, stands along the street and remains a functioning timekeeper. Restaurants and cafes occupy restored warehouses, offering regional cuisine and traditional sweets in historical settings. The pedestrian-friendly street allows leisurely exploration of shops, architecture, and atmospheric side lanes.

Kawagoe Ichibangai is accessible from Hon-Kawagoe Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line (approximately 10-15 minutes on foot) or Kawagoe Station on the JR Kawagoe Line and Tobu Tojo Line (approximately 20 minutes on foot or via local bus). Direct trains from central Tokyo take 30-45 minutes depending on the departure station and service type.

Reseñas de viajeros

La arquitectura es muy bonita, te permite apreciar muchos edificios antiguos. Aun así estaría muchísimo mejor si no tuviera tanto tráfico la calle principal, se podría disfrutar mucho más del paseo.
