Shirahama Beach is a coastal resort in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, on the Kii Peninsula overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The name "Shirahama" means "white beach," describing the white quartz sand characterizing the coastline. The beach has attracted visitors since the Edo period for its coastal scenery and hot springs. During the Meiji period, improved transportation transformed Shirahama into an established resort destination. The area gained national recognition in the mid-20th century as domestic tourism grew, becoming one of Japan's premier seaside resorts known for both beaches and hot springs.

The beach extends approximately 640 meters along the coast with white sand historically imported from Australia to maintain its distinctive color and texture, though management practices have evolved. Beyond the beach, the area features dramatic coastal formations including Senjojiki, a wave-eroded rock platform, and Sandanbeki, steep coastal cliffs. The combination of white sand, clear waters, hot spring facilities, and rugged coastal geology creates diverse coastal environments.

Visitors engage in typical beach activities including swimming, sunbathing, and water sports during the warmer months from late spring through early autumn. The beach facilities include changing rooms, showers, and equipment rentals. The gentle slope and relatively calm waters in protected areas make it suitable for families, though ocean conditions vary with weather and tides.

Beyond beach activities, visitors often combine coastal time with visits to nearby hot spring baths, as Shirahama is one of Japan's oldest hot spring resorts with multiple bathing facilities including oceanfront and historic bathhouses. The coastal rock formations at Senjojiki and Sandanbeki provide dramatic scenery and walking opportunities.

Shirahama is accessible from Osaka via the JR Kuroshio Limited Express to Shirahama Station, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Local buses connect the station to the beach area in 10 to 15 minutes. By car via the Hanwa Expressway and Route 42, the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours from Osaka. Nanki-Shirahama Airport offers limited domestic flights, mainly from Tokyo. Beach access is free, though facilities like changing rooms, umbrella rentals, and parking charge fees.
