Torokino Falls, Yakushima

Torokino Falls is located in the mountainous interior of Yakushima, a subtropical island in Kagoshima Prefecture recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. The waterfall sits along the Anbo River system in the island's dense primeval forest. Yakushima's exceptional rainfall, averaging over 4,000 millimeters annually in mountainous areas, feeds numerous waterfalls throughout the island. Torokino Falls is one of Yakushima's accessible yet scenic waterfalls, less visited than destinations like Jomon Sugi.

The waterfall holds natural significance within Yakushima's UNESCO-designated wilderness protecting ancient yakusugi (Yakushima cedar) forests and unique subtropical ecosystems. The falls cascade approximately 6 meters over moss-covered granite rocks. The surrounding forest represents the transition zone between lowland subtropical vegetation and montane temperate forests. The constant moisture from the waterfall creates a microclimate supporting dense moss coverage, ferns, and epiphytic plants.

Visitors reach Torokino Falls via a hiking trail from the Anbo River Trail parking area, requiring approximately 40 minutes of moderate hiking through forested terrain. The trail follows the river valley, crossing streams via bridges and stepping stones. The path can be slippery due to moisture and moss. At the falls, visitors view the cascade from an observation area. The pool at the base is shallow and visitors sometimes wade in the water. The surrounding forest provides opportunities to observe moss-covered trees, ferns, and wildlife including Yakushima macaques and yakushika (Yakushima deer).

Access the trailhead from Miyanoura Port or Anbo town by rental car, driving approximately 15-20 minutes to the parking area. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Kagoshima (about 4 hours) or high-speed jetfoil (approximately 2 hours), or by flights to Yakushima Airport. Rental cars are essential for accessing the falls. Hiking is free. Visitors should prepare with appropriate footwear for wet conditions, water, and rain gear as weather changes rapidly.
