Hida Takayama Museum of Art

The Hida Takayama Museum of Art is a notable institution in Takayama, renowned for its focus on Art Nouveau and Art Deco masterpieces. Opened in 1997, the museum houses an extensive collection of over 1,000 pieces, including furniture, glasswork, and decorative arts, primarily from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum’s collection is particularly strong in glass art, showcasing works by celebrated artists such as Émile Gallé, René Lalique, and Daum, who were pivotal in the development of Art Nouveau.

One of the museum's standout features is the Gallé-designed glass pavilion, which exemplifies the intricate and naturalistic designs that defined the Art Nouveau movement. The museum building, designed by architect Hoshino Michio, harmonizes with the surrounding landscape and provides stunning views of the Japanese Alps, adding an extra layer of aesthetic experience to the visit.
