Shiba Park

Shiba Park is Tokyo's oldest public park, established in 1873 during the Meiji era as one of Japan's first Western-style parks. Located in the Minato ward, the park was created from the grounds surrounding Zōjō-ji Temple, a historically significant Buddhist temple that has served as the family temple of the Tokugawa shogunate since 1598. The temple remains an active religious site within the park boundaries and houses the mausoleums of six Tokugawa shoguns.

The park's most distinctive feature is its proximity to Tokyo Tower, which stands immediately adjacent and dominates the skyline. This 333-meter tall communications and observation tower was completed in 1958 and has become an iconic symbol of Tokyo. The juxtaposition of the traditional temple architecture, mature trees, and the bright orange tower creates a uniquely Japanese blend of old and new that defines the park's character.

Visitors can explore the spacious temple grounds, observe Buddhist ceremonies, and appreciate the traditional architecture of Zōjō-ji's main hall and impressive Sangedatsumon Gate, which dates from 1622 and is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The park offers pleasant walking paths through landscaped gardens, open lawns, and seasonal flowers, with cherry blossoms in spring being particularly popular. The area provides numerous vantage points for photographing Tokyo Tower framed by temple structures or natural elements.

Shiba Park is easily accessible via the Toei Mita Line at Onarimon Station, Shibakoen Station, or Daimon Station, all within a 5-minute walk. The Toei Asakusa Line and Toei Oedo Line also serve nearby Daimon Station. Entry to the park grounds is free, though separate admission fees apply for entering Zōjō-ji Temple's main hall and Tokyo Tower's observation decks.
